Barbara Carroll was a pioneering jazz pianist and vocalist who would have celebrated her centennial birthday on January 25, 2025. The New York Times' Stephen Holden called her "the first lady of jazz piano . . . with her bright red hair piled high, she embodied a timeless bohemian elegance and artistic grace."
On Sunday, March 16, to celebrate Women's History Month, Sanford Josephson, Editor of Jersey Jazz Magazine will present a tribute to Carroll. In addition to speaking about her life and career, he will show several video clips of her performances.
A resident of Basking Ridge, Josephson is the author of Jeru’s Journey: The Life and Music of Gerry Mulligan (Hal Leonard Books), published in October 2015, and Jazz Notes: Interviews Across the Generations (Praeger/ABC-Clio), published in June 2009. He is also one of 90 journalists and photographers who contributed to The Jazz Omnibus -- 21st-Century Photos and Writings by Members of the Jazz Journalists Association, published in 2024 by Cymbal Press.
