Retrospective Film Series: They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?
Monday, December 16, 2019, 06:45pm

The Springfield Free Public Library's 1969 Retro Film Series concludes with a screening of They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? at 6:45 PM on Monday, December 16.

Featuring a multigenerational cast of great performers that includes Jane Fonda, Gig Young, Red Buttons, Bruce Dern and Bonnie Bedelia, the film captures the desperation of a group of down on their luck contestants in a dance marathon that serves as entertainment for a more affluent audience whose members are able to afford the price of a ticket. As the contestants are egged on by an ever more manipulative master of ceremonies, the outlook for them becomes increasingly bleak. This film continues to hold the record for the most Academy Award nominations for a film that did not also get a nomination for best picture. Gig Young received an Oscar for his role as Rocky, the master of ceremonies.
