Fiore Blanco by Elaine Lorenz
Fiore Blanco, a sculpture by New Jersey artist Elaine Lorenz, was placed on the lawn in front of the library on June 8th, 2009. The following information is taken from the artist's statement: The construction of Fiore Blanco began with a welded steel armature. Galvanized metal lath and woven fiberglass mesh were attached to create the forms. The structure was then covered with layers of a mixture of cement, sand, water and an acrylic polymer additive. The combination of steel and cement is strong and since the wider parts are hollow the sculpture is much lighter in weight than a cast piece. The sculpture, made in 1996, consists of three separate units which, when combined, are 76" high and 44" in diameter.
The sculpture is a project of the Springfield Beautification Committee, Ruth Schwartz, chair. The sculpture will remain in front of the library for one year. No library funds were used for the placement.
