Looking Back 50 Years
Monday, February 11, 2019, 07:00pm

Journalist, TV pundit, radio commentator and podcaster Evan Weiner will present “Looking Back 50 Years: the Exceptional Events of 1969” at 7:00 PM on Monday, February 11, in the Donald B. Palmer Museum of the Springfield Free Public Library.

Milestone events of 1969 include the landing of the first man on the moon, the introduction of the artificial heart, the Stonewall Riots marking the beginning of the modern gay rights movement, the Miracle Mets World Series victory, and the last public performance by the Beatles, as well as the introduction to the world of such classics as Sesame Street, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and Arpanet, the precursor to the Internet.

Evan Weiner, recognized globally as an expert in the politics of the sports business, produces a daily podcast on that topic in addition to being a regular on television and radio in both the United States and the United Kingdom, including appearances on BBC Radio, MSNBC and ABC television, and The Guardian newspaper in the U.K. Weiner has also written six books and speaks in a variety of venues, including cruise ships, colleges, and libraries. This program is being offered to the public as the library’s kickoff event in celebration of the opening of the library’s current building at 66 Mountain Avenue on February 24, 1969. On this year’s actual anniversary date, which happens to fall on a Sunday, the library will offer a celebration that includes a 2:00 PM performance by the Odessa Klezmer Band, accompanied by light refreshments.

Additional celebrations through the anniversary year will include screenings of some of 1969’s classic film releases, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at 7:00 PM on January 24. A schedule of additional films, including True Grit, Take the Money and Run, Hello Dolly, and Easy Rider will be announced at a later date. A schedule of book discussions of titles that were popular in 1969, including The Godfather, by Mario Puzo and Slaughterhouse Five, by Kurt Vonnegut will also be announced at a later date.
