(Really Good!) Book Discussion
Thursday, February 07, 2019, 07:00pm

The Springfield Free Public Library's (Really Good!) Book Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, February 7th at 7 p.m. to discuss The Miniaturist: A Novel by Jessie Burton. This debut novel is set in seventeenth century Amsterdam—a city ruled by glittering wealth and oppressive religion.

Eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives to begin her new life as the wife of merchant trader Johannes Brandt. Her new home is not welcoming and her husband is distant and usually absent. However, he presents her with a cabinet-sized replica of their home as a wedding gift. Nella hires a miniaturist to furnish it and her creations mirror their real-life counterparts in strange and unexpected ways. The author was inspired to write the novel after seeing the real Petronella Oortman’s 1686 cabinet house (made to the exact scale of her own home) at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Discussions take place at 7 p.m. in the Staff Room. Refreshments are served. New members are welcome. To reserve your copy of the book call 973-376-4930 x228 or send an email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
