Health Literacy Tote Bags

The Springfield Free Public Library, as part of the Libraries of Union County Consortium (LUCC), has partnered with the Overlook Medical Center and the Morristown Medical Center libraries in a pilot program to provide resources to help improve health and health literacy in the community.

Library card holders are now able to check out Health Literacy Tote Bags packed with information on specific health topics. Tote bags available at the Springfield Free Public Library include information on Alzheimer’s Disease, Diabetes, Fall Injury & Prevention, Heart Health, Parkinson’s Disease, and Stroke. Additional topics available at other participating libraries include Arthritis, Bereavement/Grief, Hospice/Palliative Care, Mental Health, and Opioid & Substance Abuse. Tote bags include books, CDs, DVDs, and links to online resources. There are also complimentary handouts on each topic that patrons may keep.

Other participants in this initiative include the Clark, Cranford, Kenilworth, Mountainside, Plainfield, Roselle, Roselle Park, Scotch Plains, Summit, Union and Westfield public libraries as well as the health sciences libraries at Overlook and Morristown Medical Centers. This program is generously supported in part with funding from the Chubb Foundation and Novartis.
